Kittitas (pronounced 'KITT-i-tass') County is located in central Washington State. It spans from the lush forested Cascade Mountains to the upper Yakima River Valley plains and the Columbia River.
Kittitas County, WA - 09/18/2024 - Kittitas County Fire Marshal Dan Young today announced that Kittitas County will lift the burn ban for recreational fires at 00:01 AM on Friday September 20th, 2024. This change is effective only on county lands; those who want to burn recreational fires on Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, or Department of Natural Resource land will need to contact those jurisdictions. The Cities of Cle Elum, South Cle Elum and Rosyln are also allowing recreational fires at the same time as the county.
A recreational fire is defined as having a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height. Recreational fires allow only seasoned firewood as fuel, not yard waste or debris. Other open burning, including field burning and pile burning, remains prohibited at this time. The burn ban was originally implemented based on the following criteria: dry conditions together with lowering relative humidity and low fuel moisture content of 10-, 100- and 1,000-hour fuels, elevated the risk of wild land fires. It has become apparent that with the fuel moisture content currently seen in our region, the relative humidity, and the projected weather patterns, a ban on recreational fires is no longer necessary. Fire safety is everyone's responsibility! All outdoor fires must be constantly attended by an adult until the fire is extinguished. Provide adequate means for extinguishing a fire and keep it readily available. Don't burn if wind conditions make it hazardous. Any questions regarding burning regulations within the unincorporated areas of Kittitas County may be directed to Dan Young at the County Fire Marshal’s Office.
