Shape Up Kittitas County

This program works to develop an infrastructure in Kittitas County that supports health lifestyles. Work is completed by means of a local coalition of key individuals from both public and private entities through planning, policy development and implementation of programs that promote wellness through physical activity and good nutrition.

Vision

Our vision is to have residents of Kittitas County Valley communities pursue an active and healthy lifestyle.

Goals

Shape Up Kittitas CountyBy 2015:

  • 35% or less of Kittitas County adults are overweight.
  • 28% or less of Kittitas County adults are obese.
  • 30% or less of Kittitas County adults are at risk for health problems due to lack of exercise.
  • At least 40% of youth between 8th-12th grade report 20 minutes or more of daily aerobic exercise.
  • At least 40% of Kittitas County adults consume at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day.
  • At least 40% of youth between 8th-12th grade consume 5 or more fruits and vegetables per day.

Facts & Figures

  • 58% of Kittitas County adults are overweight or obese (2007 BRFSS)
  • 42% of Kittitas County adults do not meet recommendations for physical activity (2007 BRFSS)
  • 53% of Kittitas County 10th grade students report at least 60 minutes of activity on five or more days per week (2008 HYS)
  • 24% of Kittitas County adults consume at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day (2007 BRFSS)
  • 18% of Kittitas County 10th grade students consume at least 5 fruits and vegetables per day (2008 HYS)

Funding

This program is funded by a Healthy Communities grant from the Washington State Department of Health and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention; and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act through the Communities Putting Prevention to Work program.
